Our Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old.  All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes.  Your child will mostly be taught through games and play.

Understanding the World

Four guiding principles should shape practice in early years settings. These are:

Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers
Children develop and learn in different ways (“the characteristics of effective teaching and learning”) and at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

How we differ to other day nurseries…

At 4Kidz Childcare @ Gosling we support the children’s play and learning through ‘In The Moment Planning’.  In the moment planning is a very simple idea – observing and interacting with children as they pursue their own interests and also assessing and moving the learning on in that moment.  The written account of some of these interactions becomes a learning journey.  This approach leads to deep level learning and wonderful surprises occur daily.  Since changing to this approach in planning our children have made wonderful progress and been very engaged in their learning – as well as being happy as they can initiate their own learning in their own time.

In The Moment Planning

In some nurseries you may find that at Christmas all the children leave with identical pre-made cards that have been pre-cut by adults and the children have been told where and what to colour and stick – by doing this it is actually disenabling the children’s creativity.  We want the children to celebrate their uniqueness and creativity in a way that in individual to them. For example some children may choose to make a card, some may choose to dress up as Father Christmas, some may make a snowman outside, some may paint winter scenes on the windows, some may roleplay stories, some may make up songs – and all of these concepts are equally valued and recorded through photographs and observations for you to treasure.  By doing activities in this way, the children are more engaged in their experiences and happy, so the learning is far greater than in a very structured environment.
