A Day in the Life at 4Kidz Childcare Nursery
Choosing the right nursery is one of the most important decisions parents make. At 4Kidz Childcare Nursery in Welwyn Garden City, every day is carefully planned by our team to provide children with a fulfilling balance of learning, play, and social interaction.
In this blog, we’ll take you behind the scenes to show what a typical day looks like for the children in our nurturing environment.
Starting the Day at 4Kidz Childcare Nursery
On arrival, the children are encouraged to hang up their coats and bags on their pegs. Once they’ve settled into their room, we offer a nurturing breakfast, which is available from 8:00 am to 8:45 am.
We set aside a short amount of time each morning to sing our welcome song, talk about the weather, and what day of the week it is. Children are then encouraged to explore the different areas of the room and supported in accessing any resources and activities they may be interested in.

Learning Through Play
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development, and care of your child from birth to 5 years old. As 4Kidz Childcare is an Ofsted-registered early years provider, this means we include free play, time spent outdoors, or an adult-led activity.
We call it “In The Moment Planning.” It is a very simple idea – observing and interacting with children as they pursue their own interests, and also assessing and moving the learning on in that moment.
For example, a child had been to the zoo and was excited to talk about their experience, so we built on that interest straight away. We set up a zoo-themed tuff tray, created small animal houses using Lego, completed puzzles featuring zoo animals, and read books together about going to the zoo.
This approach leads to deep-level learning, and wonderful surprises occur daily. Since changing to this approach to planning, our children have made wonderful progress, have been very engaged in their learning, and have been happy, as they can initiate their own learning in their own time.
Nutritious Meals and Healthy Habits
Nutrition and healthy habits are important for growing children as it supports their physical, mental, and emotional development. Forming these healthy habits at a young age will give them an advantage as they grow up.
At 4Kidz Childcare, we ensure that our food is all prepared to the highest standards. Our two-week menu provides a wide selection of healthy snacks and balanced meals.
Our menus can also be adapted for children with allergies or dietary requirements. We have a dedicated chef who prepares meals for the children in our own kitchen.
We are proud to hold a 5 (Very Good) Food Hygiene Rating.
On a typical day, we serve morning snacks at 10:00 am, lunch at 12:00 pm, and tea at 4:00 pm, so parents don’t need to worry about their children’s meals while in the nursery.
Outdoor Play and Active Development
Outdoor play promotes active physical development. It supports a child’s thinking, coordination, and confidence in the early years.
We create safe, engaging environments where children are encouraged to move, explore, and thrive every day.
With two main play areas – Happy Hedgehogs and Growing Goslings – children are encouraged to free-flow between the various activities available, choosing those they like or trying something new.
Ending the Day and Keeping Parents Informed
At pick-up time, before our nursery closes at 6:00 pm, our Nursery Practitioners will also give you regular verbal updates, helping you stay closely connected and fully involved in your child’s day with us.
We use our Famly app to keep you fully informed about your child’s day, including sleep, nappy changes, food that has been eaten, and for babies, the amount of milk they have drunk from their formula bottles.
We also encourage you to share updates through the app, such as if your child had a restless night or ate less than usual at breakfast, so we can better understand anything that may affect their routine.
A parent’s involvement in nursery life is important, as it enriches a child’s experience. We therefore invite and encourage parents and carers to become actively involved, from sharing their particular talents, reading a story (especially in a home language), to simply joining us and spending time with your child and their friends.
