How Much Physical Activity Do Under-5s Really Need?

How Much Physical Activity Do Under 5s 1

From the moment they are born, young children learn through movement. Active play not only helps little bodies get stronger, but it also supports thinking, coordination, and confidence. Children who are active early are more likely to enjoy being active as they grow.

At 4Kidz Childcare, we believe in nurturing healthy habits from the start — and that includes helping your child move, explore and play every day.

Why Movement Matters

Physical activity supports:

  • Strong muscles and bones
  • Balance and coordination
  • Healthy heart and lungs
  • Better sleep and emotional wellbeing
  • Social and cognitive development

Under 12 Months

Babies benefit from supervised floor play, tummy time (around 30 minutes spread across the day), and safe exploration as soon as they begin to move independently.

Toddlers (1–2 Years)

Toddlers should enjoy at least 180 minutes (3 hours) of activity daily, spread throughout the day. This can include walking, running, dancing, climbing, and outdoor play.

Pre‑schoolers (3–4 Years)

Pre‑schoolers also need a minimum of 180 minutes of activity each day, with at least 60 minutes being energetic play such as running, jumping, climbing, or riding bikes.

Practical Ways To Encourage Movement

  • Create indoor obstacle courses
  • Have daily dance sessions
  • Visit local parks and green spaces
  • Encourage outdoor exploration
  • Break up long periods of sitting

Final Thoughts

Movement is essential for healthy growth and development in the early years. Active play doesn’t need to be structured — it just needs to be regular and enjoyable.
